In Part One: Bike Alarm vs. Bike Tracker, we separated two concepts that are often confused: preventing bike theft and recovering a stolen bike.
This article focuses on the first step in bike theft prevention: choosing the right place to park and locking your bike correctly. Your bike's security is usually determined before you even turn the key. A tracker may help you find a stolen bike, and a bike alarm may draw attention when someone moves it, but neither can compensate for a poor parking decision. The primary goal is to make theft slow, exposed, and inconvenient.
The short answer:
Secure bike parking and correct lock-up techniques are your first line of defense. Choose a bright, visible, and busy location; lock the frame to a fixed, solid structure; protect both wheels; and remove easy-to-steal accessories. Add an alarm and tracker as extra layers of security.
1. Before You Lock, Choose the Environment
Use four words to assess any bike parking spot: LIGHT, VISIBLE, BUSY, SECURE.
- Light: Good lighting makes suspicious activity easier to notice.
- Visible: Keep the bike in public view or within the line of sight of legitimate CCTV. Do not hide it behind walls, vehicles, or landscaping.
- Busy: Foot traffic increases the risk of being noticed while attacking a lock.
- Secure: Look for a purpose-built rack fixed to the ground, access-controlled bike parking, or an area with regular staff or security presence.
This is not a guarantee. A camera does not secure your bike, and a crowded place is not automatically safe. But a visible, well-used location gives a thief fewer advantages than a quiet corner or a hidden rack.

2. Inspect What You Are Locking To
Your bike is only as secure as the object it is attached to. Choose a solid, closed structure that cannot be lifted, unbolted, or easily cut. A lock on a weak object—such as an open-topped post, a small tree, or a temporary railing—offers a false sense of security. Thieves may simply lift the bike free, dismantle the object, or cut through it; in those cases, the lock achieves nothing.

The same rule applies at home: a garage, shed, or shared bike room is not an excuse to leave a bike unlocked. It is a reason to lock it to a proper ground anchor as well.
Look for:
✅ Sheffield stand securely anchored in concrete
✅ Heavy-duty fixed metal bike rack
✅ Permanent ground anchor
✅ Access-controlled cycle cage (with the bike locked again inside)
Avoid:
❌ Low posts
❌ Open-topped signposts
❌ Temporary railings with removable bolts
❌ Small trees
❌ Locking only a wheel
3. Lock the Bike, Not Just One Part of It
One common mistake is relying on a single lock-up point:
- Locking only a wheel can leave the frame vulnerable to theft.
- Locking only the frame can leave a wheel behind.

The correct approach is to secure the rear wheel, frame, and fixed bike rack together. For added security, use a second lock for the front wheel and frame, especially when the theft risk or the duration of your stop justifies it.

4. Make the Bike Lock Hard to Attack
Even a high-quality bike lock can be easier to attack when positioned poorly.
- Keep the lock's internal space as tight as practical. Extra room makes it easier for thieves to insert cutting or prying tools.
- Keep the lock off the ground whenever possible, making it much harder for a thief to strike it against a solid surface with a hammer.
- Position the keyway downward or shelter it from rain and road spray. This also makes tampering less convenient.

The goal of these positioning techniques is to increase the time, noise, tools, and visibility required to attack the lock.
5. Remove Easy Targets
Bike theft is not always about the whole bike. Lights, bike computers, action cameras, panniers, baskets, pumps, and e-bike batteries are easy targets when left exposed.
Take removable accessories with you. If a component must stay on the bike, use a retention system or security hardware where appropriate.
Crucially, do not make a thief's job profitable just because the frame is still there.
6. Think in Layers, Not in One Perfect Lock
There is no single product that completely solves bike theft. Think in layers: secure parking reduces opportunity; correct locking techniques delay removal; a motion-sensitive bike alarm adds immediate attention and urgency; a bike tracker supports recovery and reporting; and serial numbers, photos, and registration help prove ownership. Do not ask which single device will save your bike. Ask how many obstacles a thief must overcome before they can leave with it.
